Sports San Diego (a trade name of the San Diego Bowl Game Association) still promotes SeaWorld on its Holiday Bowl website, despite knowing that the abusement park confines sensitive, intelligent orcas such as Corky—the saddest and longest-held captive orca in the world—to tiny concrete tanks.
Corky was violently torn away from her family and ocean home in 1969. She lost all seven of her babies and has known only misery for more than half a century. In nature, orcas like her can swim up to 150 miles per day, but at SeaWorld, they have little to do but swim in endless circles. Confining orcas to barren tanks where they can’t escape attacks from other frustrated animals—which Corky has experienced multiple times—and forcing them to perform tricks is a form of speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview, and it must end.
Please use the form below to tell Sports San Diego that there’s nothing sporting about confining orcas and other marine animals to tiny tanks.
