For over 50 years, the Iditarod dog-sled race has been forcing dogs to run past their breaking points and even to their deaths. Three dogs—Henry, George, and Bog—died in the 2024 race alone. While nearly every major company has ended its partnership with the deadly event, energy provider Harvest Midstream and its affiliate Hilcorp Alaska continue to sponsor this cruelty.
The Iditarod forces dogs to run approximately 100 miles a day for up to two weeks in blistering cold weather through unforgiving Alaskan terrain. Many dogs incur stomach ulcers and stress fractures, are afflicted with dehydration or diarrhea, or even die from aspiration pneumonia during the grueling race, and 81% are left with lung damage. Forcing these friendly, trusting animals to run long distances for human entertainment is a form of speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
Major sponsors such as ExxonMobil, Alaska Airlines, Chrysler, and Coca-Cola have already pulled their support, and it’s time for Harvest Midstream and Hilcorp Alaska to follow suit so that we’ll be one step closer to ending the deadly Iditarod.
