The coronavirus crisis has shown us that cramming sick and stressed animals together in unsanitary conditions creates the perfect breeding grounds for dangerous zoonotic diseases, which can jump from other species to humans. Minks on fur farms all over the world—including in Canada—have contracted the virus that causes COVID-19 from human workers, and recently, the government in British Columbia announced that mink farming would be banned because of the major health threat to the public.

However, in Nova Scotia, it was recently announced that fur farms would continue to operate and that thousands of minks would be vaccinated against the disease. As a Canadian resident, you would fund this with your tax dollars.
The province plans to split the cost with the federal government, which means that Canadians everywhere would be paying via their taxes. Vaccinating minks slated to be violently killed for their fur doesn’t make sense. The solution, rather, is to shut down these cruel and filthy farms that should have never been opened in the first place.
Minks are shy, solitary animals who enjoy having a vast habitat in which to forage, climb, and swim. But on fur factory farms, they’re confined to wire cages that are often stacked atop each other, allowing disease to spread easily through urine, excrement, pus, and blood. Keeping these farms open not only is cruel but also risks creating the next pandemic.
It’s great that mink farms are banned in British Columbia, but it’s crucial that they also be closed throughout the rest of Canada, including in Nova Scotia. Please take action below to urge Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Minister of Agriculture Marie-Claude Bibeau to shut down fur farms immediately!
