Nothing defines America quite like baseball, (vegan) apple pie, and our love of dogs, as the U.S. has the highest dog population in the world. So it’s surprising that the Atlanta Braves has ties to one of the deadliest dog-sled races on Earth—the Iditarod. The race has already resulted in the deaths of more than 150 dogs, yet Braves owner Liberty Media supports the cruel event through its company GCI’s continued sponsorship.
Dogs forced to run in the Iditarod are made to pull a heavy sled through about 1,000 miles of unforgiving Alaskan terrain, all while battling biting winds, blinding snowstorms, and subfreezing temperatures. The race is so grueling that up to half the dogs who start it are unable to finish, suffering from severe illnesses or injuries or collapsing from sheer exhaustion. Forcing dogs to run until they drop for entertainment is a form of speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
Alaska Airlines, Chrysler, ExxonMobil, Wells Fargo, and other major sponsors have already severed ties with the Iditarod. The Atlanta Braves should call foul on this partnership and ensure that owner Liberty Media parts ways with the deadly race.
Take action now to ensure that America’s favorite pastime cuts ties with the Iditarod.
