What the cluck? Considering the documented cruelty on factory farms, the rising price of chicken flesh, the illnesses associated with eating meat, and the increased demand for vegan chicken, Shaquille O’Neal’s Big Chicken, Wingstop, Buffalo Wild Wings, and other chicken restaurant chains should add vegan chicken options to their menus as soon as possible.
Chickens are inquisitive, social animals whose cognitive abilities are on par with those of cats, dogs, and some primates—but 9 billion of them are killed for their flesh each year in the U.S. alone.
These animals are forced to live in filthy, disease-ridden, windowless sheds that are no better than cages. Often, they don’t have enough room to stretch out their wings and part of their sensitive beak is cut off. At the slaughterhouse, their legs are forced into shackles. Their throats are cut often while they’re still conscious, and then they’re submerged in scalding-hot water to remove their feathers.
Terms like “humane” and “cage-free” are meaningless labels that do little or nothing to improve the lives of animals and ultimately still involve the violent death of individuals who struggled desperately at the slaughterhouse to keep their throats from being slit. The only truly humane foods are vegan.
