Even though sponsors are dropping their support of the Iditarod, some companies have chosen to trash their reputations by partnering with the cruel dog-sled race. Capstone Clinic and Alaska Native Renewable Industries (ANRI) are inexplicably throwing their support behind this event, in which more than 150 dogs have died.
Imagine running four marathons a day for 10 days straight. Add biting winds, blinding snowstorms, and subzero temperatures. Unthinkable, isn’t it? Yet that’s exactly what dogs in the Iditarod are forced to do.
Dogs love to run, but even the most energetic one wouldn’t choose to run 100 miles a day while pulling a heavy sled through some of the worst weather conditions on the planet. Along the 1,000-mile stretch, dogs’ feet are torn apart by ice and rocks. Many pull muscles, incur stress fractures, or become sick with diarrhea, dehydration, intestinal viruses, or bleeding stomach ulcers. Others die from aspiration pneumonia—the leading cause of death for dogs on the trail—caused by inhaling their own vomit. Dogs are our friends, our companions, and members of the family. They should be taken for romps in the park, not forced to run to their death in this speciesist event.
Major sponsors such as Alaska Airlines, Chrysler, Coca-Cola, ExxonMobil, and Millennium Hotels and Resorts have already pulled their sponsorships, and it’s indefensible for Capstone Clinic and ANRI to support the race.
Please e-mail the CEO of Capstone Clinic, politely asking the company to reverse course and drop its sponsorship.
