Barbie has long been fur-free and an animal advocate, but Mattel has taken a turn for the worse and is now selling a breeder Barbie. This doll, which comes with a pregnant toy dog and three pups, sends the damaging message that bringing more dogs into the world is something to be excited about and celebrate, when in reality, breeding contributes to the overwhelming companion-animal overpopulation crisis.
More than 6 million dogs and cats enter U.S. animal shelters every year, yet only about half of them are adopted. As a result, millions of animals—many of them healthy, young, and adoptable—must be euthanized every year, simply because there aren't enough good homes. Every time that a breeder brings another animal into the world, one sitting in a shelter—who is just as deserving of love—is denied the chance to find a good home. Mattel should be teaching children to be responsible animal guardians—by having their animals spayed or neutered and always adopting from shelters, not by bringing more into an already-overcrowded world.
Please contact Mattel's corporate office and ask the company to discontinue Barbie Newborn Pups Doll immediately. Tell it that encouraging breeding when so many homeless animals already exist is irresponsible and unacceptable.
