Based on evidence from a PETA undercover investigation into Plainville Farms—a “humane” turkey supplier to top grocers Publix, Wegmans, and Kroger-owned Harris Teeter—the Pennsylvania State Police charged 12 former workers with a total of 141 counts of cruelty to animals, which is the largest number of charges in any factory-farmed animal case in U.S. history.
In 2021, PETA’s undercover investigation revealed that Plainville Farms workers viciously kicked, stomped on, and beat turkeys with a heavy rod. Video footage showed employees mercilessly attacking birds and tossing them through the air by the wing, neck, head, and snood. Despite knowing about the cruelty involved, Publix, Wegmans, and Harris Teeter continue to sell Plainville Farms turkeys with a “humanely raised” label.
Turkeys are intelligent animals who enjoy having their feathers stroked and who like listening to music, with which they’ll often loudly sing along. These gentle birds are very bonded to their young—in nature, a mother turkey will courageously defend her family against predators.
The best way to help turkeys and other animals who are cruelly raised and violently killed for food is simply to stop eating them. Please contact Publix, Wegmans, and Harris Teeter now and demand that they reconsider their relationship with Plainville Farms.
