As many as 2.7 trillion sensitive, intelligent fish are killed globally every year—and that figure doesn’t include the billions of fish who are factory farmed in aquaculture cesspools. Some of these animals are destined for human consumption, many are tortured just for “sport,” and others are unintended victims who are maimed or killed simply because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Each year, billions of pounds of trash and pollutants—ranging from plastic bags and bottles to microplastics, fishing gear, and abandoned boats—enter the ocean. Plastic debris kills more than 1 million marine animals every year. It’s estimated that there are currently 100 million tons of plastic in the world’s oceans and that by 2050 the oceans will contain more plastic than fish. Abandoned fishing gear makes up most of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch—the world’s largest single accumulation of floating trash—46% of which is composed of fishing nets.
“Trash fishing” is a fun, animal-friendly activity that involves removing litter—rather than fish—from the water. It helps clean waterways and protect turtles, birds, and other animals from eating or becoming entangled in litter, which can prove deadly.
In honor of Fish Amnesty Day (Saturday, September 24), which was instituted to remind people that all animals should be treated with respect, please urge your local legislators to establish an official Trash Fishing Day. Together, we can protect fish and make the environment safer and healthier for everyone!
