The leather industry subjects over a billion sensitive animals each year to horrific cruelty. Animals used for leather endure joyless, painful lives in cramped, filthy conditions, until they’re violently slaughtered—often while still conscious and in full view of one another.
This cruel industry is also harmful to the environment. Producing cowskin leather contributes significantly to water pollution, depletion, and greenhouse gas emissions, far more than the production of any synthetic or plant-based vegan leather does.
Consumers worldwide are recognizing the cruelty. Cows are remarkable animals—they can recognize over 100 other cows, and they grieve when their friends or family members die. But most importantly, they can feel fear, stress, and pain. It’s unacceptable to abuse and kill them for any reason, including for clothing and accessories.
With the availability of animal-friendly materials, such as vegan leather derived from apples, mushrooms, tree bark, banana leaves, cactus, and grapes, it’s time for fashion companies to choose style, compassion, and conservation by selling only vegan leather.
Aritzia, ASOS, Fossil, Mixology Clothing Company, and Talbots already sell faux leather and know how popular it is. It would be easy for them to make this compassionate change.
