An alarming provision in the proposed House Farm Bill (HR 8467) threatens to funnel taxpayer money into the cruel and archaic mink industry. We need your help to get it removed. Section 3201(d) of the bill would repeal existing laws and allow federal funds to be directed toward helping the mink industry develop and expand into international markets—a change that would support animal suffering and pose a danger to public health.
Minks are shy, solitary animals who are fearful of humans and enjoy having a vast habitat in which to forage, climb, and swim. PETA undercover investigations have revealed that on fur farms they’re confined to cramped wire cages that are often caked with waste. The animals frequently show signs of extreme psychological distress, such as frantic circling and self-mutilation, and suffer from infections, gaping wounds, and other illnesses and injuries that commonly go untreated. After a life of misery, minks are gassed to death or their necks are broken before their skin is peeled off.
Virologists and epidemiologists confirm that cramming sick and stressed animals together in unsanitary conditions creates the perfect breeding ground for dangerous zoonotic diseases, including COVID-19, which can mutate in minks and jump to humans and has been found on hundreds of mink fur farms around the world, including in the U.S.
By earmarking taxpayer dollars to support mink farming, HR 8467 would prioritize a dying industry over ethics and public safety. Please urge Congress to change this dangerous bill!
