PETA has discovered that hundreds of endangered monkeys are being flown into the U.S. for use in cruel and deadly laboratory experiments by Malta-based carrier SmartLynx Airlines.
SmartLynx reportedly packed 800 long-tailed macaques into tiny, barren shipping crates and sent them on a grueling journey lasting more than 43 hours and stopping in seven cities around the globe.
According to information PETA received from a credible whistleblower, while en route to Miami from Mauritius, the airline allegedly denied the monkeys water on an 18.5-hour portion of the trip despite having 3 layovers to refill their water containers. The carrier also reportedly did not provide paperwork logging when the animals last received food or water, as federal regulations require.
The company is no stranger to monkey torment. In November 2024, PETA asked federal officials to investigate the airline for failing to transport monkeys in secure, labeled cages. Photos and videos shared with PETA also revealed terrified monkeys, some dead, locked in cages smeared with feces and blood, destined for the U.S. on a SmartLynx aircraft.
Upon arrival, surviving monkeys are trucked to laboratories where they are mutilated, poisoned, killed, and more in pointless experiments.
PETA urges the U.S. Department of Agriculture to investigate SmartLynx’s apparent federal Animal Welfare Act violations. We’re also asking the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to investigate, and if the allegations are proven, issue violation notices to SmartLynx.
