Last year, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) exposed a Texas facility [https://investigations.peta.org/greyhounds-farmed-for-blood/] where, imprisoned in a filthy former turkey shed, 150 perpetually penned greyhounds were neglected and farmed for their blood in horrendous conditions. Although that blood bank has closed, greyhounds are still being held at other facilities in which the living conditions are unnatural and inhumane.
Recently, PETA revealed [https://investigations.peta.org/hemopet-greyhounds-expose/] that approximately 200 greyhounds—most, if not all, of whom were bred for and discarded by the racing industry—are confined for up to 23 hours a day for 18 months or even longer in cramped, stressful conditions at the canine blood bank Hemopet, a sham rescue facility in California that boasts that it sells dogs' blood to more than 2,000 veterinary clinics in North America and Asia.
Please join me in speaking out against the long-term caging of greyhounds for blood collection.
