The National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) spends nearly half its annual budget—about $23 billion in 2023—on experiments on animals that overwhelmingly fail to produce treatments or cures for humans.

But recently, under the Trump administration, the agency has been shaking up the scientific status quo for the better by reducing tests on animals and instead directing much-needed resources toward animal-free research methods.
Congress must now follow NIH’s lead and allocate funding for state-of-the-art human-relevant research that helps patients, benefits taxpayers, and most importantly, saves millions of animals from being sickened, mutilated, and killed in pointless experiments.
