Sea Lion Splash is a business built on exploitation – the exhibitor trucks sea lions across the country, housing them in tiny, mobile trailers. Other businesses do the same with sharks and stingrays. At each stop, workers unfurl above-ground pools, and this is the largest body of water these ocean-dwelling animals will ever see. Sea lions are forced to do unnatural tricks for rowdy crowds, and the sharks and stingrays are exposed to bacteria and chemicals as fairgoers stick their hands into the tanks.
The current owner of Sea Lion Splash has been cited multiple times by federal authorities for violating the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). Inspectors have repeatedly noted dilapidated facilities that exposed animals to possible injuries, a lack of enough space for the animals to make species-typical movements, and multiple instances of failing to provide them with adequate veterinary care. In 2022, a sea lion died after they received lacerations from exposed screws and sharp edges in the tank, prompting an Official Warning from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, an enforcement action reserved for egregious apparent AWA violations.
Sea Lion Splash is a chasing profits at the expense of animal welfare, and the business is currently trying to expand. Sea Lion Splash recently acquired more sea lions and seals from the notorious Miami Seaquarium that closed in 2025 after a years-long PETA campaign. Currently, Sea Lion Splash and other traveling shows are reportedly gearing up to exploit more animals, in more locations than ever before.
