As rescuers near an abandoned property in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, an unsettling stillness fills the air. They arrive under the cover of clouds and get to work quickly, trying to evade detection by drones from nearby frontlines.

A gentle horse approaches, while several dogs and sheep watch timidly, hoping someone is here to help. Around them lies the wreckage of a destroyed home, empty food bowls, troughs of dirty water, and the bodies of animals who were killed in a previous drone attack. As the team loads animals into trailers to whisk them to safety, a boom suddenly shakes the ground—the barn has been hit.

Every day, PETA-supported teams are putting everything on the line to rescue animals in Ukraine, and they urgently need your help.

The team rushed to save animals as the barn caught fire, its thick smoke concealing the heartbreaking remains of horses who had already died while waiting for help. They brought more than 30 horses, dogs, sheep, and goats to safety—but many more animals in Ukraine are still waiting.

The war in Ukraine has raged for more than one thousand days—each one bringing more danger and distress for animals living in a battleground. Animals do all they can to survive as they are injured by bombings, abandoned by owners fleeing the ever-shifting frontlines, and traumatized from the constant stress and fear that surrounds them.

PETA-supported teams have rescued more than 20,000 animals, providing them with essential food and care… animals like Britney, a dog found hiding from intense gunfire who was so frail she could barely lift her head; Plombir, a cat trapped under rubble with torn paws and a fractured leg; and Maria, a horse whose hoof was shattered after she stepped on a landmine.

As cold weather intensifies, rescue work will become more challenging—and even more critical. Your support will fuel more daring rescues and help animals heal from injuries and trauma. You’ll also help power the construction of a new PETA-supported sanctuary, which is providing a safe haven for 850 animals, including the horses and other animals the team just rescued.
