Imprisoned in a small barn, the donkeys had no escape. No food. No water—just an empty trough. One donkey’s untrimmed hooves curled into long spirals, making it excruciatingly difficult for him to move. He lay in filth, but when he struggled to stand up, pain shot through him—pure agony.

As a member of this committed team of first responders, I know that we are often the only hope for animals like these donkeys and goats. Funded entirely by compassionate PETA donors like you, our team responds to every call about animals in danger, working with a network of government officials, veterinarians, and rescuers to free animals from some of the worst conditions imaginable.

With your support, we help rescue sick, starving, and wounded animals from hoarders, dogfighting rings, and disease-ridden breeding mills. We push law enforcement to seize neglected animals and shut down horrific operations. We track down suspects—including those who set animals on fire, shoot, or poison them—and help put them behind bars.

Witnesses said they hadn’t seen the donkeys outside of that barn in two years—and their owner often left them without food, water, or bedding. After a concerned citizen called PETA’s emergency line, we acted immediately, working with a local humane officer to get the animals to safety and ensure they were treated by a veterinarian.

Without our intervention, these animals might have died inside that structure—hungry, thirsty, and in unbearable pain. Now, cruelty charges are pending against their neglector, and the animals can begin to heal from their trauma.
